Improving Your Listening Skills

In order to be able to communicate successfully with others we have to develop our listening skills, truly listening to what someone is saying and understanding them is the key to effective communication. While the majority of us think we listen to what others are saying, in fact very few of us actually do listen intently and this is where misunderstandings can arise, which leads to difficulties and sometimes arguments.

Most of us has, over the years developed poor listening habits and have continued through life with these habits, some of the most common habits that people have developed which leads to poor listening skills include.

• Listening without really hearing what the other is saying, which often leaves us missing the point
• We allow other influences around us to distract us and drift away from the conversation
• We pretend we are listening when in fact we are thinking of something else and only hear snatches of what is being said Continue reading

Carbon Dioxide Emissions Dramatically Accelerating at Alarming Rate

Carbon dioxide — the greenhouse gas considered most responsible for global warming — has been emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere at a dramatically accelerating pace since 2000, researchers reported Monday.

“Carbon dioxide is rising at a much faster rate than before,” says study co-author Christopher Field, director of the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology in California. “In the 1990s, CO{-2} emissions increased by about 1.3% per year. Since 2000, the growth rate has been 3.3% per year.” The researchers calculate that global carbon-dioxide emissions were 35% higher in 2006 than in 1990.

What’s especially troubling, notes lead author Josep Canadell of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, is most climate scenarios used by scientists and policymakers to predict temperature increases are based on the 1.3% rise. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide warm the planet by trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Canadell says that while the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts “we will have temperature increases of 3.2 to 7.1 degrees by the end of the century, … we’re well on the way to the higher temperature increase if the emissions keep going up at this rate.”

Higher global temperatures have been predicted to cause rising sea levels, more frequent heat waves and wildfires, and huge losses of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic.

The study was published in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It states that carbon released from burning fossil fuels and making cement rose from 7 billion metric tons a year in 2000 to 8.4 billion metric tons in 2006. A metric ton is 2,205 pounds.

Medications That Can Battle Bronchitis

There are basically two kinds of bronchitis, acute and chronic bronchitis. These two may have the same last names but they vary from their causative effects and treatment prescribed to control the diseases.

Acute bronchitis is a short-term illness that becomes rampant during the cold seasons. It is usually followed by a viral infection and can go together with a bacterial infection. Acute bronchitis is self-limiting which clears itself within fourteen days but the cough may continue. Like any other upper respiratory tract infections, having acute bronchitis can raise chance of developing pneumonia.

People who are at risk of getting acute bronchitis are infants, very young children, and the old adults. This is due to the fact that infants and very young children still have underdeveloped immune systems, while the old adults, on the other hand, have immune systems that have become weaker due to ageing. Other group populations who are at risk are smokers and those with preexisting lung and/or heart ailments. People who are often exposed to pollution are also at risk of being afflicted with acute bronchitis.

How to Deal with Real Life Situations in Love, Money and Relationships

Going by what Oscar Wilde once said, “Life imitates art”, perhaps, many people behave and live in imitation of their favorite movie characters and consequently get themselves into trouble or feel obliged to embrace avoidable sorrow or indulge in self-deception that they are doing the right thing. Real life situations are a world apart from reel life situations, although many situations depicted in good movies appear to be quite realistic and impressive. It is the skill of the scriptwriter, the expertise of the director and the cinematographer as well as the actors’ skillful portrayal of the various roles in the movie in a combined effect that makes you believe that the illusion presented in the movie is a reality. Movies are meant to provide merely a means of entertainment, but they have grown to influence life to such an extent that not only movies are based on real life, but real life incidents are modeled on movies.

Seuss Books

Theodor Geisel, better known by his pen name of Dr Seuss, is a national treasure in the United States and a part of most people’s childhood. He wrote and illustrated dozens of children’s books over his long career. Some of those Seuss books have become classics of children’s literature. In addition to being fun for adults and children alike, they are also helpful in teaching the very young to read.

Seuss was born in 1904 in Massachusetts to parents who wished for him to become a doctor. That ambition was derailed when he became more interested in his writing and cartoons. Newspapers and magazines accepted his illustrations and funny articles. During the depression, Seuss made ends meet for himself and his wife by drawing advertisements for major companies. By the time World War II began, there were four Seuss books published for children. During the war, Seuss contributed political cartoons to a left wing newspaper and wrote propaganda films on behalf of the US armed forces and war effort.

Word Search Puzzles

I can’t seem to find much time for myself, but I do find a moment or two between working, my child, cleaning, and my husband to do something for myself. There are times when I just want to take a half an hour to do a crossword puzzle. Of course, me sitting and doing what appears to be nothing is a great way to attract the attention of my child. She always wants to come over to see what it is that I am doing. She is far to young to do these, but that does not stop her from wanting to try. Instead of letting her scribble in my crossword book, I have been looking for word search puzzles that she can do at her age.
